What it is

Nuqta is a smart scratchpad and snippet manager, named after the Arabic word for dot. It borrows the opinionated minimalism of the macOS Tot app and adds a keyboard-centric Linux workflow with local AI. The constraint that makes it work is deliberate: there are exactly seven colored dots, so you cannot hoard notes. When a dot fills up, you process it, save it, or clear it.

It is a Rust, GTK4, and libadwaita app that floats above your other windows using gtk4-layer-shell, summoned by a global hotkey. The editor is built on SourceView5 with Markdown rendering and optional Vim bindings. The interesting part is that the slash commands (/format, /summarize, /extract-todos) run against a local LLM through llama.cpp, so text processing never leaves the machine. A /save command promotes a note into a permanent, searchable snippet database.

The shipping work was mostly about keeping the binary small while offering optional CUDA-accelerated local inference, which I documented separately.
